PayPal raised its full-year adjusted profit forecast on Tuesday, as the payments giant benefited from robust consumer spending, while measures to cut costs improved operating margins in the first quarter. Consumer spending has shown remarkable resilience even as economic worries clouded the outlook for the payments sector for months. The company expects 2024 adjusted profit to increase by "mid-to-high single-digit percentage", compared with its earlier forecast of it remaining flat. PayPal's operating margins improved 84 basis points, on an adjusted basis, to 18.2% in the first quarter. The company's low-margin business products have risen strongly, while growth in its branded products slowed due to increased pressure from competitors such as Apple .

High school seniors are more likely to attend college if they complete the federal financial aid form known as the FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid. But the state that was the first to require students to fill out the form to graduate, Louisiana, has reversed course and dropped the mandate, after state officials decided it was too intrusive. (The network prefers to call such practices “universal FAFSA” policies, rather than “mandatory,” because all states with the requirement allow students and their parents to opt out if they don’t want to fill out the form.) “We know FAFSA completion and enrollment are associated with each other,” Mr. DeBaun said. Filing the form allows students to get their share of federal grants.

CNN —The James Webb Space Telescope has captured scintillating portraits of 19 spiral galaxies — and the millions of stars that call them home — in unprecedented detail never seen before by astronomers. Astronomers believe that about 60% of all galaxies are spiral galaxies — and our solar system resides in one of the spiral arms of the Milky Way galaxy. Webb’s observations can help astronomers better understand star formation and the evolution of spiral galaxies like our own. The James Webb Space Telescope captured images of 19 spiral galaxies in near- and mid-infrared light. The images will be used to help astronomers determine the distribution of gas and dust in spiral galaxies, as well as how galaxies both nurture and cease the formation of stars.

Officials Urge Moldova to Seize Opportunity for EU Membership

By Alexander TanasCHISINAU (Reuters) - Moldova launched a nationwide discussion on securing European Union membership, with senior officials and academics urging their compatriots to seize every opportunity to join the bloc or run the risk of being left behind or sinking into chaos. Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu launched the discussion on EU membership on Friday, saying that public participation "has a critical meaning in building a more prosperous future within the framework of the community of Europe". The Moscow-sympathetic opposition, thrown out of power by Sandu's landslide 2020 election victory, is sceptical about EU membership. Moldovans, their country wedged between Ukraine and EU member Romania, have proved enthusiastic. Sandu and other officials have suggested that Moldova should forge ahead with its EU membership bid and ignore separatist Transdniestria, much like Cyprus was allowed to join despite the Turkish occupation of its northern regions since the 1970s.

"Our losses and negative cash flows from operating activities raise substantial doubt about our ability to continue as a going concern," WeWork said in a filing with the SEC on Tuesday. The company had a net loss in the first half of the year of $700 million after losing $2.3 billion in 2022. WeWork said its revenue grew just 3.6% year over year in the second quarter and declined 4% in the U.S., where it gets 41% of its sales. In the second quarter, the company contributed $6 million of WeWork's revenue, down from $10 million in the second quarter of 2022, according to the filing. Key factors for whether WeWork can remain a going concern include limiting capital expenditures, increasing revenue and seeking capital through debt or equity issuance.
